NZeTA for Australian Permanent Residents: Visa Rules, Costs, and Passport Links
Australian permanent residents must have a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they travel to New Zealand. Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA and get an Australian Resident Visa at the border instead. Your Australian permanent resident visa or resident return visa must be current and linked to the passport you travel on.
The NZeTA costs from NZD $17 and allows stays of 3 months per visit.
Why Australian permanent residents need an NZeTA (unlike citizens)
Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents are treated very differently under New Zealand immigration rules.
This is a key distinction: holding Australian permanent residence does not give you the same border treatment as holding Australian citizenship.
To travel to New Zealand, you must have either a valid New Zealand visa or an NZeTA. For Australian permanent residents, the NZeTA is the practical route for short visits. You must have a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before you travel to New Zealand.
You can use your NZeTA to travel to New Zealand multiple times while it is valid.
Australian permanent residents requesting an NZeTA also need to meet the standard NZeTA requirements.
The specific Australian visa types that qualify for an NZeTA

This is the core visa requirement for an NZeTA as an Australian permanent resident.
This is an important restriction. Provisional visas do not meet the requirement, even if they are a step towards permanent residence.
If your Australian visa is not current, or if you only hold a provisional visa, you do not meet the NZeTA requirements for Australian permanent residents. You should check your visa status with the Australian Department of Home Affairs before requesting an NZeTA.
How to link your Australian visa to your passport for travel
Linking your Australian visa to your passport is an Australian immigration matter, not something you do inside the NZeTA request. If your visa is not linked to the passport you will use, you need to resolve that with Australian authorities before you travel.
Once your Australian visa is linked to your passport, you can apply for nzeta using that same passport. The NZeTA is electronically linked to the passport you use in the request.
Here is the recommended process:
Check your Australian visa status. Confirm that your Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Australian Resident Return Visa is current and not provisional.
Confirm the visa is linked to your intended travel passport. If you have renewed your passport, your Australian visa may need to be re-linked.
Request your NZeTA using that passport. The NZeTA costs from NZD $17.
Keep your NZeTA confirmation email.
Travel on the same passport. If your passport changes before travel, you need a new NZeTA linked to the new passport.
The NZeTA fee is paid when you request the NZeTA, not at the border.
What happens at the New Zealand border for Australian residents
This is the visa you receive at the border as an Australian permanent resident travelling on an NZeTA.
This means each arrival under your NZeTA results in a new single-entry visa waiver visitor visa.
You can be refused entry permission if you cannot provide evidence of onward travel or the money required.
If you stay in New Zealand after your NZeTA expires without a valid visa, you may be detained or deported and not be able to return in the future.
Key differences between Australian citizens and permanent residents
| Factor | Australian citizen | Australian permanent resident |
|---|---|---|
| NZeTA required before travel | No | Yes |
| Visa at the border | Australian Resident Visa | Visa Waiver Visitor Visa |
| Passport requirement | Australian passport | |
| Stay length per visit | Not limited by NZeTA rules | 3 months per visit |
| Fee | No NZeTA fee | From NZD $17 |
Some people, including Australian citizens, do not need a visa or an NZeTA.
There is no exception for Australian permanent residents based on their residence status alone.
Australian permanent residents must also meet the NZeTA requirements, and must have a current Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Australian Resident Return Visa linked to the passport they travel with.
NZeTA validity and stay limits for Australian permanent residents
The NZeTA itself can be used for multiple trips.
However, each visit is limited to 3 months.
If you want to return, you use the same NZeTA for a new visit, as long as the NZeTA is still valid and you have not exceeded the 6-month limit.
If you plan to visit for longer than 3 months, or 6 months for UK citizens, you need to apply for an appropriate visa before you arrive. The NZeTA is not the right tool for long stays. For a comparison of costs between the NZeTA and a visitor visa, see NZeTA vs visitor visa cost.
You cannot get this visa if you intend to work in New Zealand. You may be able to work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand. This is a narrow exception, and it does not allow you to work for a New Zealand employer.
You will not meet the requirements for an NZeTA if you need a sponsor to cover your costs in New Zealand.
If you are coming to New Zealand for medical treatment or consultation, you must apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, not an NZeTA. If you want to come for a medical consultation or treatment, you need to apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa before travelling to New Zealand.
If you need accommodation while waiting for a flight, you must get a Visitor Visa to enter New Zealand. This applies to transit situations. For more on transit rules, see nzeta transit visa.
Transit through New Zealand for Australian permanent residents
You need an NZeTA to transit through Auckland International Airport if you are travelling on a passport from a visa waiver country or transit visa waiver country, unless you are on the list of travellers who do not need an NZeTA.
This applies to visits; for transit, the rules depend on your passport nationality and destination.
This is relevant for Australian permanent residents returning to Australia via Auckland.
If you already have a valid New Zealand visa, you do not need an NZeTA. This applies to transit as well as visits. A valid visa for New Zealand can be a work, student, visitor, resident or permanent resident visa.
Costs and fees for Australian permanent residents
The NZeTA costs from NZD $17. This is the fee for requesting an NZeTA.
For example, two Australian permanent residents travelling together would pay from NZD $34 in NZeTA fees. This is a simple multiplication of the per-person fee and does not include any other travel costs.
The NZeTA does not include health coverage. You should arrange travel insurance separately if you want cover for medical costs.
