UK ETA vs ESTA for US Citizens: Which Applies?

A comparison can be useful when a group has different passports or an itinerary includes both countries. It becomes misleading if it suggests an American should apply for ESTA on returning home.

Returning to the United States

CBP states that US citizens, including dual citizens, must use their US passport for US travel and are not required to obtain ESTA. Do not use a second nationality as a way to apply for an authorisation intended for Visa Waiver Program visitors. See CBP's ESTA nationality questions.

Visiting the United Kingdom

For a short British visit, a US passport holder should check ETA eligibility and exemptions. Existing UK permission or British or Irish citizenship can change the answer. Your intended activities and stay also matter. Use the official UK checker and our UK ETA guide for US citizens.

A mixed-nationality travelling party

Illustrative example: a US citizen and an Italian friend travel to London, then New York. They check their British requirements separately. For the US leg, the American uses a US passport; the Italian traveller checks ESTA or visa eligibility. The documents are personal, not shared across the booking.

What should you compare?

• The destination and purpose of each journey.
• The passport and immigration status of each traveller.
• Official application charges versus optional assistance fees.
• The actual decision and the time left before departure.
